It was baked until it hardened and served as a dessert or treat. Originating in Scotland, the first published recipe for shortbread was in 1736 by a woman named Mrs. McLintock. They can be made into rectangular shapes, as you will with this recipe, or circular shapes, sometimes with a maraschino cherry added on top. Walkers Shortbread is a brand of commercially made shortbread cookies that are imported all over the world. These are fairly easy cookies to make at home, though, and as we all know, things tend to taste better when they're are homemade.
